The Four: 3

The Four: I
The Four 2

New Neighbor
3

            Alison told Louise the story of how they found out about the new neighbor. The three girls had been taking an afternoon stroll. When they had come upon the grand house. There was a trio of two horse carriages; servants were bustling about. Curious and wanting to welcome the newcomers Susan suggested the girls go and be hospitable by saying “Hello” to them. So they went and asked one of the menservants where the owner of the household was. The polite Butler told them it was Mr. Darkshire and his friend Mr. Benting. He also said the two men were resting from the journey, and the three girls would have to come by some time later.
            “Wow, have you gone back yet today?” asked Louise
            “No we decided to go tomorrow so they would be fresh and comfortable in their new home,” replied Alison.
            “Well, tell us how your day went.” Said Karen.
            “It went well! Turns out the owner of the store, Mr. Turner, is a tough one and no one ever want to work at the store because of his temper. His son is the cashier. That is why I got the job pretty quick. And they needed help,” Louise smiled; “I also got pay!” she showed them the money.
            “We should have a jar for it! And put everything we earn in the jar,” Susan said!
            “This one!” Alison came over with a small jamming jar.
            “I know this is all very exciting but we need to eat and get ready for bed. We’ll talk more in the morning” Louise said putting the coins in the jar.
            The sun was just beginning to set as the girls were washing up after dinner.

                                                                        <::>
Susan lay in bed.  She couldn’t wait to meet the new neighbors. It was very late, all the sisters were fast asleep, except for Susan. Susan tossed and turned, suddenly an idea popped in her head, Should I? She asked herself. Then shook her head, No, much to late for that but I could go for walk. Yes. That is what I will do. Quickly she arose and wrapped her shawl around herself. The night was cold but she went anyway.
                                                                        <::>
            “Hello Mr. Turner,” Louise said politely to the young sub-store manager.
            “Umm, Miss Hanson, today I’ve to go out of town for business. If you would like, you can take care of the store for a couple of days or do I need ask my father to come in?”
            “Oh.Well, I think I can handle the challenge.” She smiled. “Where are you going?”
            “Business, not of much interest,” he said quickly, “ But I will be going in the direction that you live and was wondering…if you would like me to drive you instead of you having to walk?” he finished in a rush of words.
            “Thank you, but how do you know it won't be much of a detour?” Louise raised her eyebrow.
            “Oh,” he rubbed a spot on the counter, “I know my way around. Nothing is to much of a detour for me.”
            “Then I accept.”Giving him a silly grin.“Let’s get to work.”
                                                                        <::>
 Three of the sisters walked up to the large house. “You knock.” Alison told Karen. Karen nodded slowly.
            “Are you too scared?” She challenged her
            “No!” Alison was shocked. “Just because…” she trailed off.
            “ I’ll knock.” Susan piped up and before anyone could protest, she stepped forward and knocked loudly three times.
            “Yes?” a maid asked when the door was opened by her.
            “Umm, we are your neighbors from down the road a ways.We came to say hello to…” Alison ended awkwardly.
            “ Mr. Darkshire?” the maid helped Alison politely.
            “Yes, thank you.” She answered.
            “Come this way.” the maid led them into the high ceiling house. Looking around the house, Susan began to wander. No one noticed as she slowly strolled to a door on the far right of the room. Susan did this quite often; she would begin to wander without realizing it, lots of the time she got herself lost. She observed the door knob for a while then she casually turned the knob. The room was cozy, and full of bookshelves that were packed with thick old books and volumes. Still in her wandering daze, Susan began plucking a small book off the shelf. The novel had an intriguing title and she couldn’t help but start to read it. Opening it to the first page, she read aloud;
            The Phantom’s Choice,” There was a rustle movement from the corner of the room. Susan, who was suddenly pulled from her wandering daze, turned around and gave a sharp gasp. A man had gotten up from a tall backed chair that was facing away from her. Susan dropped the book and it landed with a great thud on the ground. The man was semi-tall with rich dark brown hair, and dressed in a white button up shirt that was quite wrinkled. His pants covered black leather boots with silver spurs still on them. To Susan’s surprise the man seemed just as startled and embarrassed as she felt. The man turned away and shook his head as if he was imagining things he didn’t want to. And then just as sudden as he had done so, the man snapped his fingers and ran over to his desk, either refusing to notice Susan or forgetting she was there. Susan came out of shock and took this moment to escape. Urgent and bewildered at what had just happened, Susan tried to find her sisters, hoping no one had noticed her absence. Ah. She thought There they are. Mustn’t have been gone to long. Susan casually stepped behind her sister Karen. Only one person had noticed she was missing. Alison turned and fixed her with a steely glare. She knows. Alison always knew when Susan did something wrong, Susan could get away with things when it was only Karen or Louise, but Alison…no way.
            “This is Mr. Bentings study. Wait here while I tell him you’ve come to say "Hello.”" The maid looked back at the girls then went inside the room. She came quickly out, and with a smile, she said, “You may come in.”
            When they entered the room there was a very young, cheerful man sitting in a chair near the hearth.
            “Welcome!” he said with a grin. He offered them a seat.

Chapter 3 (Fairies of Wonderland)

Knock! Knock!Knock! Lizz woke up with a start! "Wh-what? Oh." She muttered. "Someone must be knocking on the door." I got my robe on and ran down the stairs. I opened the door,"Yes?"          Trixie was standing in front of me,"I... " then she burst into tears!
 I let her inside," Here, sit down, I'll get you some tea, and I will go get dressed real quick while you drink it." I ran upstairs saying,"I will be right back!"
 "Okay." Trixie said as she drank the tea.
 After I got dressed and brushed my teeth, I ran back down the stairs.
 "I'm sorry I burst like that." Trixie apologized.
 "It's alright." I replied."So why did you burst out crying like that?"
 "Well you know how the Queen wants us to, or she wanted me to get everyone relaxed?" She answered." Well everyone is too busy to come to my spa." She burst into tears again.
 "Calm down Trixie," I tried to make her feel better.

More of Chapter 2 (Fairies of Wonderland)

 I went to the kitchen and and got some beets, warmed them, and then sat at the table. And I started drawing ideas for the statues. Carving statues necessitated a lot of pre-thought.

                     ______.............______

On the other side of Wonderland, another Queen heard of Kayla's celebration.
"So they're having a party." said Queen Maska.
"Oh that would be exciting!" her daughter replied."Mom we're not going to be invited."
"Oh, I don't think that will be a problem."The Queen of Terrimain smiled secretly.

The Four 2

                                                                        First Day
                                                                 2

Louise was ready to leave before any of the other girls were up and left as quickly as she could. After preparing breakfast and milking the cow, Louise, in her work clothes, left for town.

                                                                        <:::>

            “Yes, sir” Louise answered to the tall, aged man that was the owner of the store
            “Are you a hard worker, Louise Hanson?”  he asked.
            “ I always try to be, sir,” she said humbly.
            “Are you or are you not?” growled the man.
            “Yes, sir”
            “Good, because, we don’t need any slackers around here. Alright, your hired, here is your list of things that are needed to be done, and I want you to run any errands that Josh, over there, tells you to do,” Josh glanced over checking why his name had been mentioned and slowly went back to work, ”Got it?”
            “Yes, sir,” Louise said, “ I understand.”
            “Alright then start working, and every couple of days I’ll come and check how you are doing.” With that, the old man left the shop.
            “Pretty tough, isn’t he?” asked Josh, the young clergyman,
            “He’s just doing his job,” Louise said politely. Josh stopped to put his hands on top of his broom, laid his head on them, and looked at her curiously.
            “Did you know how surprised I was when you came and asked to work here? Do you know why we don’t have any one already working here, I mean it’s a good job for a lady who’s husband has a low paying job to get some extra money. And I’ll tell you there’re plenty of them out there. It’s because of his temper.  He was a lot nicer to you this morning because you’re new and he didn’t want to scare you off. We have had signs out for weeks and weeks, months even. No one came. All because they knew about his anger, but he refuses to be kind no matter what.” Louise looked at him after starring down at the floor in thought as Josh had spoken.
            “Then why are you here?” she said after some thought.
            “I’m his son,” he stated simply.
            “Oh,” Louise looked at her feet, “Well I better get to work. I don’t wan to be known as a slacker!” and off she was dusting and cleaning. Soon Louise found her way to the cloth and material and fancied the beautiful fabric, Quickly catching herself, she continued to dust.
            It was about three in the afternoon when Josh called he over to the check-out counter.
            “ Louise-“ He began but she interrupted him.
            “ Miss Hanson, please,” she requested, curtsied politely, then waited for him to continue.
            “Miss Hanson,” he corrected himself slowly, “I would like you to watch the check out for me while I run a short errand. I’ll be back soon so don’t worry about not knowing what to do.”
            “What am I supposed to say?”
            “Say ‘Hello, how may I help you’ and I think you can take it from there. I’ll be back before you can say a word!” and then he left the shop, Banging the door. Louise stood at the counter and examined her list of things to do she had already done six of them four to go. Sighing, Louise began to clear the small checking area. There were disheveled piles of receipts, paper and different odds and ends. Louise jerked from her work by the sound of clopping heels.
            “May I help you wi-“ before Louise could finish the plump and gaudily dressed woman spoke in rudely
            “Hurry up. I want two pounds of sugar. Make it quick” the lady wasn’t necessarily dressed richly. She looked like a moderately poor person trying to look rich which made it all the more disgusting. Thankfully the young, inexperienced cashier knew where the sugar was kept and ran to get some. Louise hurried to the old woman and handed her the pounds of sweetness and had it snatch from her with greedy arms. The woman stomped out of the shop.  Few! That was quite the customer.  Louise thought. Just then Josh came in the store with two large burlap sacks on his shoulders.
            “I see you got a customer. One of the mean ones,” he commented. Louise nodded her head. They worked on silently for the rest of the day a costumer would come in every now and then, buy a few things, and then walk out. Finally it was time for the shop to close.
            “Here, Lo-Miss Hanson, is your pay for the day. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Josh said as he handed her two dollars. Louise took them gratefully.
            “Thank you for getting me this job. I am more than thankful.” She acknowledged.
            “You are more than welcome.” He replied. Louise left the General Store and started her trek homeward.  When she arrived home all three girls came rushing forward, Alison called out,
             “Guess what! Guess what, Sister!”
Louise was dumb founded
            “Oh, my! What is it? What is going on?” all four sisters were talking at once Louise didn’t understand a word. “Wait a moment. Calm down, Alison tell me what is going on.”
             “ A new neighbor just moved in next door! That darling big house down the road a few miles, he moved into that one! And there are maids everywhere! Oh but I guess we should go inside and tell you the story and then you can tell us what happened at work,” Alison added. So all the girls walked to the house and sat around their “table” to talk. The story was told.
